I also used WASD to move, spacebar to activate, all that good stuff, no need to suffer under OG Dos settings treat yourself and all that. For science, I played both Doom 1 and 2 twice on PC on the Ultra-Violence difficulty and using my elephantine powers of recall, I count my Hurt Me Plenty playthroughs of both on Xbox One in summer of 2020 as well, as much of my impressions are identical between all playthroughs.

I’m always interested in how games feel to play and how they make us feel as we play, and I think Doom excels at actualizing the exciting promise of its fiction through sound effects, creative art design, and engaging playgrounds to shoot through. So what does a late bloomer Doomer (a zoomer Doomer?) like me have to add? For starters, the perspective of a recent initiate who lacks the proper nostalgic eyewear that can cloud objectivity. It’s hard to say something new about Doom-it’s the most important first-person shooter ever made, and set the standard for weapon variety, enemy AI, and 3D level design for years to come, cool story, bro, we all read the Wikipedia.
